Ethics approval and consent to participate
: The study was granted a waiver from the need for approval by the Ethical Committee of the Canton of Geneva, as it did not involve the collection of any personal health information (article 2 of the Swiss Federal Act on Research involving Human Beings) []. The participants were informed that the data would be analysed and reported (after being anonymized, in the case of the teachers and coordinators).
: Teachers and coordinators signed a written consent form for publication. Students involved in the think aloud process also signed a written consent form for publication. As part of a quality improvement project of the Federal Licensing Exam, we did not ask for an informed consent for publication from candidates who answered an online survey immediately after the exam. They were however free to answer or not the survey which included questions on communication skills’ training and assessment among many other questions.
