: The study was planned in accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation and was approved by the Regional Ethics Committee of The North Denmark Region (2016–000615). Written and oral informed consent for participating in this study was obtained from all study participants. They could at any time withdraw from the study. All written materials, quotes, and personal identifiable information were anonymised, and in this article, each participant had an individual identity code, for example NGD1. The NGDs worked across various departments, and it was therefore necessary to inform many employees about the project. We did this by posting notices in the break rooms, and by correspondence to all participating departments’ management. However, we are aware that it is not possible to inform all whom the NGDs interact with as the NGDs worked in several departments and interact with many collaborators. This is why anonymisation of both departments and participants, and confidentiality of all data gathered is paramount []. When the NGDs interacted with patients, the fieldworker either introduced herself or was introduced by the NGDs, typically very briefly as ‘one observing our work’. Often the patients in the A&E were acutely ill, and the setting was not appropriate for a thorough introduction. However, if patients or relatives asked, the purpose of the project was clarified and explained.
