Ethics approval and consent to participate: The study protocol was approved by Makerere University, School of Medicine Research Ethics Committee, (SOMREC; REF: 2020–024), and the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST; HS542ES). School of Medicine Research Ethics Committee is a REC under the Makerere University School of Medicine and is accredited by the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology. Administrative approval to conduct the trainings was obtained from the respective partner institutions across the six EAC partner states. Co-investigators and focal persons in each country informed all relevant stakeholders about the training program and associated assessments. Participation in the training and associated assessments was entirely voluntary, and all participants provided their informed consent to take part. All assessment activities were conducted in compliance with the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki.
