:
: Ethical approval for the DoRIS qualitative study was granted from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Ethics Committee (ref: 11972) and the National Health Research Ethics Committee in Tanzania (ref: NIMR/HQ/R.8a/Vol.IX/2682). Informed consent for participation in the acceptability study was obtained by a qualitative researcher explaining the study, providing written information, and answering any questions. Written informed consent was obtained from the parents, and written informed assent was obtained from the girls. Witnessed informed consent and signing with a thumbprint was obtained in the case of parent/guardian illiteracy, as approved in the ethics committees.
: Not applicable.
: KB reports grants from BMGF during the conduct of the DoRIS trial, and grant support from Merck Pharmaceuticals outside the submitted work. This constitutes a financial competing interest, but was not felt to have affected the study from proposal to manuscript development. The other authors declare that they have no competing interests.
: This project was completed as part of a dissertation in partial fulfilment of LF’s MSc Public Health from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, for which KM was supervising.
