: This is a sub-study that falls under a larger research study with the title ‘Nurse outcomes, patient safety and quality of care in the public and private hospitals of South Africa’ (NWU-00033-19-A1). The sub-study is titled ‘Impact of COVID-19 on nurses’ health and career outcomes in the private sector of South Africa’ (NWU-00033-19-A1-03). The study was approved by the North-West University Health Research Ethics Committee (NWUHREC), and ethics committees of the four private hospital groups.
