Ethics approval and consent to participate
: The Ethics Committee of Partners Healthcare (2012P001069) and the Navajo Nation Human Research Review Board (#NNR-11.150) approved the study. To comply with research guidelines outlined by the Navajo Nation Institutional Review Board (NNIRB), the study team also received approval resolutions from 11 chapters within 4 of the 8 SUs to record interviews with COPE participants. Each study participant consented to the interviews and signed a consent form to be recorded and for their de-identified data.
: All study participants have provided consent for their de-identified direct quotes from their interviews to be published in this manuscript. Please note, the names Jonathan, Shuman, Marie, Sheldon, Vincent, David, and Robert, utilized in the results section, are pseudonyms used to protect the identity of participants and do not reflect the real names of participants in this study.
: Dr. Sonya Shin discloses that she served as the Executive Director for a 501(c)3 organization, entitled Community Outreach and Patient Empowerment Program (COPE) which continues to support the described program since study completion.
