Ethics approval and consent to participate

: The study was approved by the National Commission on Ethics of Health Research (CNERS) of Guinea (N° 010/CNRS/17). The Guinean public health authorities and in the charges of the health centres concerned by the study provided the field research team with the necessary ‘mission orders’. The consent for the health care providers to self-administer the questionnaire was obtained in written. For the patients participating in the exit poll, the consent was verbal. In the context of our research, very few of the exit poll respondents can read or write. The ethical committee therefore proposed that the written consent form would be read out in local language to the potential respondents. When the latter would agree, the interview on the basis of the questionnaire could take place. It was initially planned that the respondents would then sign the consent form, but the pretest revealed that many respondents considered a signature as an expression of lack of confidentiality (their signature would be recognizable). Therefore, in order to help potential respondents to decide, a pre-established information sheet on the research, its purpose and objectives, its data collection and analysis procedures was read out to the respondents. It is only after their agreement that the questioning took place. The agreement by the National Ethical Committee on Health Research of the Republic of Guinea-Conakry testifies this arrangement (correspondence 010/CNERS).
