Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Ethical approval was obtained from the research ethics boards of the Malawi College of Medicine (P.09/16/2021) and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. Facility level consent to participate was obtained from participating primary health centres but not required from guardians of the sick children since the data was obtained from Ministry of Health implementation of the system and did not contain direct personal identifiers. The data monitoring system was established in conjunction with the Ministry of Health and no administrative permissions were required to access the data/records, however administrative permission was granted by the Blantyre District Health Office and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital for the implementation research in their respective facilities.
