: Human placental tissue was obtained from hospital tissue donations. No identifying or coded information about patients was collected. Research involving only secondary analysis of de-identified specimens is not considered to meet the definition of research involving “human subjects” set forth in Federal Regulations at 45 CFR 46.102(f). Similarly, elephant seal placental tissue was obtained secondary to natural births occurring at the Año Nuevo Reserve; IACUC approval was not required. Seal tissues were obtained under NMFS permit # 19108 (PI: Daniel Costa, UC Santa Cruz) and possessed under NMFS permit # 22479 (PI: José Pablo Vázquez-Medina, UC Berkeley). Elephant seal cell lines were generated under NMFS permit # 22479.
