: The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM REC 18-044), the Research Ethics Committee of The AIDS Support Organisation (TASO/REC/015/18-UG-REC-009) in Uganda, and the National Health Research Ethics Review Committee with its secretariat at the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR/HQ/R.8a/Vol. IX/2793) in Tanzania. The trial was done according to the Declaration of Helsinki and in accordance with Good Clinical Practice guidelines.At each clinic, the research team employed one data clerk and one research nurse to inform patients about the research, collect research data and take informed consent. All included patients signed an informed consent form. Small amounts of salary (salary top-ups) were provided to selected facility staff working with study participants and to the head nurse responsible for operations to ensure accurate data collection. Research staff worked alongside the health facility staff.
