: The Siaya HDSS, Siaya CRH, and PBIDS study protocols were reviewed and approved by the KEMRI scientific ethics review unit (SERU #1801, 2558, and 2761, respectively) and CDC’s institutional review board (CDC IRB #3308, 6543, and 6775, respectively). The Kilifi study protocol was reviewed and approved by the KEMRI scientific ethics review unit (SERU #3057). Surveillance in the sentinel sites was part of the routine Kenya Ministry of Health surveillance. Written informed consents were obtained from all parents in the study hospitals, whereas verbal consent sufficed for patients in the sentinel surveillance facilities. Additional ethical approval allowing for secondary use of data collected from these studies was sought (SERU #3939).
