: Written consent was obtained from all chicken owners. This study was primarily based on naturally occurring cases as well as a study involving the targeted mating of affected animals. All animal examinations were conducted according to national and international guidelines for animal welfare. The whole study was approved by the Cantonal Committee for Animal Experiments (Amt für Landwirtschaft und Natur des Kantons Bern, Veterinärdienst) of the Canton Bern, Switzerland (permit BE42/16).
