: All procedures were performed in compliance with the revised Animals Scientific Procedures Act, 1986 in the UK and Directive 2010/63EU in Europe approved by the Animal & Plant Health Agency (APHA- ) and birds were housed according to Home Office guidelines (Home office license -PPL 70/7249-). In this study, NovoGen Brown commercial layer hens sourced from a commercial supplier (Tom Barron Ltd., UK) were used. All experiments were conducted following the ARRIVE check list gideline (Additional file ).
