: Serum samples used for the validation of the MFIA had previously been collected for the Danish Salmonella surveillance program. None of these samples were extraordinarily taken from animals.The serum samples from experimentally infected animals were historical samples, originating from previous infection studies (unpublished) performed at the Veterinary Institute, Technical University of Denmark. These animal experiments had been performed in accordance with guidelines and regulations and had been approved by the Danish Animal Experiments Inspectorate.
