: For the field measurements of scale cortisol concentrations, according to institutional guidelines, no ethical permission was necessary for the collection of individuals in the field. The sampling itself was carried out in accordance with the approved guidelines and legislation in force with regard to animal welfare.The experimental design and housing was approved by the Ethical Committee of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Bio-engineering Sciences, Ghent University (EC2017_92). For the collection of fish from the field for these experiments, a derogation was granted by the Department of Environment – Animal Welfare (2017N06-EC2017/92).
