: The care and handling of the animals in this study strictly adhered to the ARRIVE guidelines and complied with the European Union Directive (2010/63/EU), which establishes rules for the ethical treatment of animals in scientific research. This directive, officially adopted by the Italian government under Art. 31 of DLgs no. 26/2014, sets crucial standards for animal welfare. The specific animal care protocol has been approved by the Ethics Committee of the University of Turin; Italy (Protocol no 14380) granted on 19/03/2019). The animals were privately owned by the farm “Fattoria del Pesce” in Cerano, Novara, Italy, and we obtained informed consent from the owner to use the animals in our study. To minimize the stress and discomfort of the fish during sampling, a tricaine methanesulfonate solution (MS-222, Sigma-Aldrich, Spain; 100 mg/L) was used for anesthesia prior to sampling. This precaution was taken to ensure the welfare and health of the animals throughout the research process.
