: The study was approved by the Ethics Review Committee of Royal Canin SAS (protocol code RCIBD-2012, Nov 5, 2012). All dogs had active disease and the clinical procedures used were required for the management of their case. All procedures were conducted in accordance with relevant guidelines (e.g., standard operating procedures) and regulations. The food used in the study was a commercially-available therapeutic diet that was already commonly used by veterinarians for CE, and was fed for the clinical benefit of the study dogs. In the ethical approval granted (protocol code RCIBD-2012), neither the clinical procedures used nor the clinical use of the therapeutic diets were deemed to involve animal experimentation and, therefore, fell outside the remit of national legislation. The owners of all participating dogs gave their informed consent in writing, for clinical management of their CE, for the use of anonymised data and surplus clinical samples for research purposes, and for use of data for publication. All procedures performed were clinical in nature and undertaken for the benefit of the animal.
