: The work described in this manuscript involved the use of non-experimental (owned) animals. International, high standards of veterinary clinical care for the individual patient (‘best practice’) were always followed. No cadavers were used in this study. Ethical approval from a committee was therefore not specifically required for publication in the BMC Veterinary Research Journal.
