Ethics approval and consent to participate: All experimental procedures involving animals were approved by the Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa Local Animal Ethics Committee of Animal Experiments (Approval no: 2025/106).The whitestork ( Ciconia ciconia ) is a protected wild species in Türkiye. No animals were captured orcollected from the wild for the purposes of this study; all birdswere non-releasable individuals already held under permanent care atthe Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa Veterinary Faculty RehabilitationCenter. In addition to the institutional animal ethics approval, andin accordance with national legislation governing protected wildlifespecies, scientific research permission to conduct this study wasobtained from the General Directorate of Nature Conservation andNational Parks (Doğa Koruma ve Milli Parklar Genel Müdürlüğü)of the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry(permit no. E-72784983-288.04-22432043, dated 15 December 2025). Allprocedures were carried out in compliance with the conditionsspecified in this permit and with the relevant institutional andnational guidelines for the use of protected species.The study is reported in accordance with the ARRIVE 2.0 Essential 10 guidelines [50]; a completed checklist is provided as Supplementary Material 3.
