Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Ethical approval for the study has been obtained from WIRB (study number 1251380), with the Coriell Institute IRB (reference number R165), and Cooper University Health Care IRB (reference number 19-025WIRB) providing secondary approval. All participants receive a study information sheet (i.e. a one-sheet flyer) prior study recruitment and are given the opportunity to ask questions prior to enrollment, during the enrollment visit, and during follow-up visits. All participants are asked to complete a written consent form during their baseline enrollment visit. Participants are free to withdraw from the study at any time. Participants are appropriately reimbursed for their time and effort, including compensation for transportation costs.Given that this is a vulnerable population, the consent information emphasizes that participation in this study does not affect their treatment or any relationships with the criminal justice system. A Certificate of Confidentiality has been obtained from the National Institutes of Health for this study. Identifiable data from the study will not be shared with participants’ doctors, with the exception (made clear in the consent materials) of risk of imminent harm to the participant or others (for example, plans to commit suicide). All patient data are stored on a HIPAA-compliant portal. All study staff interacting with potential or enrolled participants received training on human subjects research, as well as specific training on addiction to avoid bias or stigma when working with these individuals.
