The sputum samples used in this study included residual and completely anonymized material from routine diagnostic protocols at University Medical Centre Utrecht (UMCU). Ethical approval for the use of the sputum samples for this study was obtained from the UMCU Biobank Research Ethics Committee (TCBio) with approval number: TCBio 25–063. This approval waives the need for patient consent to participation according to TCBio regulations.
