Ethics approval and consent to participate
: This was a secondary analysis of a prospective RCT [] that was performed in 10 centers within the ARDS Network of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute research network. The original study was approved by the institutional review board at each study center, and informed consent was obtained from the patients or their legal guardians. All data were uploaded in the Biologic Specimen and Data Repository Information Coordinating Center (BioLINCC) () by the ARDS Network. The re-use of these data was approved both by the institutional review board at each center and by BioLINCC. Thus, the need for consent was waived for this retrospective study.
