: For the main cohort study in Nagongera, informed consent from the head of household or an adult household representative was obtained by the study clinician. The study was approved by the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (HS-119ES), Makerere University School of Medicine Research and Ethics Committee (2017-099), the University of California, San Francisco Committee on Human Research (17-22544) and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (14266-6). Experiments with in vitro cultured parasites and <i>An</i>. <i>stephensi</i> mosquitoes at Radboud university medical center were conducted following approval from the Radboud University Experimental Animal Ethical Committee (RUDEC 2009-019, RUDEC 2009-225).
