Permission to conduct the study in the hospital was obtained from the hospital administration. Written informed consent was obtained from the potential study participants who were in their first stage of labor. The researchers addressed cultural values regarding placental handling. Participants were informed of the test results and those with positive test results were linked to care in the hospital.
