: The study protocol was reviewed and approved by ethical boards of Maseno University Scientific and Ethics Review Committee (MUSERC/01122/22), Mengo Hospital Research Ethics Committee (MH/REC/144/10-2022), and Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (HS2576ES). We obtained written informed consent from study participants. Patients found in deteriorating state during the follow-up at homesteads were immediately referred to the closest health facility for management. Written informed consent was also sought from all key informants who participated in the study.
