: The CARDIA Study was approved by the US National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health, and all participants gave written consent. CARDIA was also reviewed and approved by the institutional review board (IRB) at each study center until a few years ago, and is now governed by a single IRB at the University of Alabama. Participants gave written consent at every clinic visit and whenever documents such as hospital records were sought. This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of Massachusetts University Lowell.
