Ethics approval and consent to participate

: This study was approved by the Institutional Ethical Review Board at Hawassa University, College of Medicine and Health Sciences (IRB/100/08), and by the Regional Committees for Medical and Health Research Ethics (REC) of western Norway (2016/1626/REK vest). Written permission was obtained from the <i>Gedeo</i> Zone Health Department and the <i>Wonago</i> district (<i>Wereda</i>) health office. Written informed consent was obtained from each woman or mother after she had received an explanation of the purpose of the study. The privacy, anonymity, and confidentiality of study participants were maintained. If a woman or neonate was found to have an illness during pregnancy, postpartum, or neonatal period, the data collectors attempted to link the patient with health extension workers in the <i>kebele</i>.
