: This study was conducted with authorization and approval from both Sudan’s Soba Centre for Audit and Research at the University of Khartoum (SCAR) and the Research Governance and Ethics Committee (RGEC) of Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS), under reference number ER/BSMS9KNA/2. It was carried out under their authority and oversight. Informed consent forms were provided to and signed by participants; literate participants gave written consent, whereas illiterate participants gave verbal consent after the first author had explained the participant information sheet and interview guide to them orally at least 24 h before consent was obtained.
