: Ethical clearance was obtained from the Research Governance and Ethics Committee of Brighton and Sussex Medical School (RGEC) and from the University of Rwanda Ethics Clearance Committee. The first author received a research permit from the National Council for Science and Technology in Rwanda. Gatekeeper permission was granted by the NGO providing the podoconiosis disease management intervention in Rwanda. Research was conducted in accordance with the University of Sussex Code of Practice for Research. All study participants were adults. They provided informed consent in written or audio-recorded verbal form after reading or being read to the information sheet and consent form depending on their literacy level and request.
