: Ethical issues have been discussed throughout the whole project. In France and Belgium, ethical approval for the study was required. For France, we obtained an agreement from CERES (Paris Descartes Ethical Committee, No. 2017-44). For Belgium, ethical approval was provided by the Ethical Commission of the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences at Ghent University (EC/2017/56). According to the ministry of justice, ethical approval was not necessary in Germany and Portugal. Guaranteeing anonymity was a major prerequisite in this study. In the interviews, sensitive data and information (e.g. about drug use in prison) was provided by interviewees. This made the anonymisation process urgently necessary. Data and information provided in our reports can neither be allocated to a certain prison nor to individual prisoners.
