: The Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study is a national longitudinal study of tobacco use and how it affects the health of people in the US. The PATH Study, which started in 2013, is a collaboration between the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The study was conducted by Westat and approved by the Westat Institutional Review Board. The Westat IRB operates in accordance with the regulations set forth by the Office for Human Research Protections within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under 45 CFR Part 46, the Common Rule. Our analysis is based on data accessed through the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) at University of Michigan.
: All adult participants (age 18 and older) provided informed consent, and adult participants who agreed to give biospecimens provided separate informed consent during the administration of PATH data collection.
