: The study was conducted according to the Declaration of Helsinki with the approval of the Regional Ethics review board of Lund University, the Swedish Ethical Review Authority, and the committee for protection of human subjects at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Written informed consent was obtained from the patients, or their parents, and the controls. All patients from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia gave initial IRB-approved informed consent and their samples were later de-identified. The study and approvals included the use of anonymized blood samples (serum samples from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and certain pediatric controls). All animal experiments, including <i>E. coli</i> O157:H7 infection and Shiga toxin injection, were approved by the regional Animal Ethics Committee (approvals M76-15 and 17452-20) and performed in accordance with regulations of the Swedish Board of Agriculture and the European Directive on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes.
