: Ethical approval and permission to conduct the study was granted by the University of Saskatchewan Behavioural Research Ethics Board (ID/4003). Additional ethical clearance was obtained from the Ministry of Health Kogi State in Nigeria (MOH/PRS/465/V.1/60). Informed consent was also obtained from participants for the observations, interviews, and focus group discussions. Additionally, the consent document provided participants with a detailed explanation of the research and data collection process to enhance transparency. Women were provided with a consent information document and informed of the research focus and purpose. They were also informed of their right to withdraw, which would not affect the care provided in the facility. Consent forms were signed when women accepted to share their experiences and obtained oral consent from their husbands. Verbal consent was obtained before the scheduled observations, interviews and focus group discussions. Participants in focus group discussions were also informed to respect the confidentiality of the other group members by not disclosing the contents of the discussion outside the group. Consent for observations was also obtained from health facilities, and posters and flyers were posted strategically in both health facilities. Participants' personal data were processed and stored in accordance with the University of Saskatchewan Behavioural Research Ethics Board. Data from observations, interviews, and focus group discussions were analyzed anonymously and stored securely in a password-protected computer separate from participants' personal information, which was only accessible to the first and last authors. Participants were assigned numerical codes to prevent identification.
