Ethical approval to conduct the study was obtained from the local ethics committee (Busitema University Faculty of Health Sciences Research and Ethics committee, reference number BUFHS-2022–18), Uganda National Council of Science and Technology (reference number HS3112ES) and Regional Committee for Medical and Health Research Ethics, Norway (REK West #278845). Women who needed psychological support were counselled by the research midwives.
