: Rodents used for isolation of primary BEC experiments were conducted in compliance with guidelines established by Danish Animal Welfare Act. Isolation of BECs from pigs were performed using brains as byproducts of the Danish food industry, from local slaughterhouses operating in accordance with the Danish Ministry of Environment and Food. Rat brains used for microdialysis, brain slice, and equilibrium dialysis experiments were conducted in compliance with the guidelines established by the Swedish National Board for Laboratory Animals and received approval from the Animal Ethics Committee of Uppsala, Sweden (5.8.18–12230/2019).
