: The study protocol was presented to the Medical Ethics Review Board (METC) of University Medical Center Groningen, the primary research institution, in May 2020. The research does not fall within the scope of the Medical Research Involving Human Subjects Act (WMO). Reference number: M20.253805. All data were anonymised and data collection, storage and analysis were done in line with Dutch privacy laws.
: Informed consent was gained from all participants.
: HO and LO are medical students from respectively Radboud University and University of Groningen. MB and CT are Ps-GHTM and are well acquainted with the specialisation as well with working abroad. RD is a psychiatrist and researcher with a PhD and MBA in Health Professions Education (HPE). JdZ is a post-doctoral researcher in GH, with a PhD in Medical Sciences and experiences in global health education and qualitative research. MV is a gynaecologist and researcher with experience in qualitative research and a background in international health as well as HPE.As this is a qualitative study, the data will have been influenced by our backgrounds. LO and HO contributed to this study as medical students with limited experience in research. This may have resulted in a more open and undirected approach to the interviews and analysis. Conversely, this may also have limited depth of the interviews and analysis. We mitigated this by direct supervision during and after the interviews, as well as analysis with experienced researchers. We applied an interactive and iterative process to this study. This was aided by frequent meetings with the research team where ideas, experience and new insights were discussed. Our study is a product of collaboration by medical students, residents and (medical) supervisors with a broad variation of personal, professional and academic perspectives.
