Ethics approval and consent to participate
: The research was approved by the North-West University Health Faculty Research Ethics Committee (NWU-00030-17-S1) and the study was conducted in line with the Helsinki Declaration and the South African National Department of Health Ethics in Health Research guidelines []. All eligible participants signed a written informed consent and data were collected in the preferred language of the participants. After written informed consent was given by the study participants, one of the researchers secured an appointment with the mother at the health clinic or at her home for a face-to-face interview for data collection. All data collection tools were completed by the researchers in the preferred language of the participants which most often was Setswana. Data were recorded on hard copy and entered into an electronic database.
: The manuscript does not have any images, videos or identifiable data of participants. During the informed consent process, a consent form in local language has been signed by all study participants which states that their stories may be published, but their names will not be mentioned. This form is available from the authors.
