: Ethical and scientific approval to conduct the study was sought from the Scientific and Ethics Review Unit (SERU) of the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) (SERU Number 3651). Institutional permission to conduct the study was sought from the administrative authorities in the sampled institutions. Familiarization and sensitization visits were made by the entire team to the study sites prior to data collection. Participants were informed of the voluntariness and confidentiality of participation in the study and a written informed consent was obtained from the participants prior to their participation in the study. To maintain participants’ privacy due to the sensitive nature of the questions, all the interviews were conducted in a private place. Participants who needed psychosocial support were referred to a counselor for further counselling and social support.
