: JH was the sole orthopaedic surgeon who performed total knee replacement surgery on the patients included in this study.

For this type of study, formal consent is not required. Ethical approval was granted from the SIVUH hospital ethics committee as well the Clinical Research Ethics Committee (CREC), Cork.
