Informed consent to participate was obtained and signed by the next of kin, who received written information about participating in the trial. Relatives were informed they could withdraw consent at any time and contact the Spanish Agency of Data Protection if their rights were not upheld. Given the slow evolution of severe acute brain injuries, patient consent was not expected.
