: Human tissue samples were collected in accordance with local ethics committee guidelines (Comitato Catania 2) upon approval of the study, and all participants provided their written informed consent to take part in the study. Animal studies were performed in accordance with the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki and the Italian law D.L. 26/2014. They were carried out also in accordance with the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals of the US National Institutes of Health (2011), and the Directive 2010/63/EU of the European Parliament. Animal care, euthanasia, and experiments were performed according to the principle of the 3Rs (replacement, reduction, and refinement) and the institutional guidelines of the University of Calabria, Italy.
