Ethical approval for the trials was obtained from the relevant authorities in each country: Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology Institutional Ethics Review Committee and the Kenya National Commission of Science and Technology Institute (License number: NACOSTI/P/19/1986), the Rwanda National Ethics Committee (Approval No. 1019/RNEC/2020 and subsequent amendments No. 41/RNEC/2022 and No. 236/RNEC/2022), and the School of Medicine research ethics committee at the Makerere University College of Health Sciences and the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology.
