: The PrEPVacc trial, together with the qualitative study, was approved by national research ethics bodies at all the four sites: South Africa Medical Research Council (SAMRC) human research ethics committee (ID EC020-11/2019), the National Health Research Ethics Committees in Tanzania (NIMR/HQ/R.8c/Vol.1/1677), Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS-REC-11-2019-066) and Mbeya Medical Research and Ethics Committee (MMREC-SZEC-2439/R.A/V.I/49) and Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI: GC/127/19/11/739), the Ugandan National Council of Science and Technology (UNCST: HS2717), and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM:21317). All potential study participants signed consent for participating in the main HIV vaccine trial and another consent document which included an agreement for audio recording for the qualitative study. The participants were assured of their freedom to participate or withdraw from the qualitative study at any time and by doing so would not compromise their participation in the main trial.
