: The data on human TBE incidences that were used in our analyses had been collected and stored by epidemiologists at the Public Health Agency of Sweden [previously the Department for Analysis and Prevention, Swedish Institute for Communicable Disease Control (SMI)]. These data do not contain any personal information. The wildlife hunting statistics, i.e. the numbers of different wildlife species shot each year in different Swedish provinces had been reported by licenced hunters to the Wildlife Monitoring Unit, Swedish Association for Hunting and Wildlife Management. According to Swedish law there is no requirement to obtain any ethical permission to use these data sets for analyses as described in this paper. The TBE data and the wildlife hunting data are freely available on the internet.
