Ethics approval and consent to participate
: The study was reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, Accra, Ghana. Written informed consent was obtained from each caregiver before interviewing them and testing their children. Each caregiver was informed of the objectives, methods, anticipated benefits and potential hazards of the study. They were also informed of the voluntary nature of the study, and that they were at liberty to withdraw their children without any penalty.
