Ethics approval and consent to participate
: All study participants provided informed consent and the study was performed after obtaining the ethical approval from Ethic Review Committee, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura Sri Lanka Review Board (ID: 11/16). All samples were handled anonymously. Because some informed consent was oral (i.e. indicated by thumbprint) the ERC approved the use of thumbprint consent for illiterate participants. Any person under the age of 18, patients who have a travel history to any other leishmaniasis endemic country, debilitated, any lesion appearing in an area of the skin where punch biopsies could not be taken safely (i.e. eye lid) and anyone who did not give written informed consent were excluded from the study. All information collected was kept under confidential cover. Further approval was taken from the National Medicines Regulatory Authority of Ministry of Health Sri Lanka to conduct this study using SpeedXract-RPA method (NMRA/E/C/NOL/DVR/13/I7).
