Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Sample collection in domestic cats was approved by the Lower Saxony State Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety according to §8 protection of animals act (33.9-42502-04-11/0436). Samples were collected only after the owners’ consent had been obtained. Felids in EAZA zoos were sampled for routine diagnostic purposes and no ethical considerations were necessary. Owners consent was always available. Prior to the import permissions according to CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) where obtained for samples from Middle Eastern countries.
