: Ethical approval and consent for sample testing was granted by the ethics committees of London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Medical Research Council Gambia at LSHTM, Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre and Tanzanian National Institute of Medical Research. The study adhered to the tenets of the Declaration of Helsinki. Study participants were aged between 4 and 11 years at baseline and 7 and 15 years at the time-point 14 of sample collection. Clinical signs and swab specimens were collected following written informed consent from a parent or guardian.
