Ethics approval and consent to participate
: The 2009 study was reviewed and approved by the Health Sciences Authority management committee and the National Environment Agencyʼs Environmental Health Institute management committee with bioethics considerations. The National Healthcare Group Domain Specific Review Board and Bioethics Review Committee of National Environment Agency, Environmental Health Institute, approved the 2013 study (DSRB Ref: 2013/00791). In both studies, written informed consent to test the samples for infectious diseases was obtained from the blood donors as part of the Donor Health Assessment Questionnaire Form. In addition, parent consent was obtained for donor below 18 years of age. Donor personal identifiers were removed prior to sample testing.
