: Ethical review and approval were not required for examining foxes for infection with <i>E.</i> <i>multilocularis</i>, because the samples were collected from animals found dead or regularly hunted according to German legislation during an <i>E.</i> <i>multilocularis</i> surveillance program conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture of the German Federal State of Brandenburg. Foxes from North Rhine-Westphalia were regularly hunted according to German legislation by the owner of the respective hunting district.
